Outbound: Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, July 18-25, 2011
Join us on a visit to our Canadian friends in the north! Friendship Force Lincoln will be participating in an outbound exchange to Lethbridge, Alberta next July, 2011.
Lethbridge, a multicultural community located in southern Alberta just north of Montana, is home to about 85,000 people. This town was originally part of the Blackfoot Confederacy before being established in the late 1800's by European settlers near Fort Whoop-Up, a whiskey trading center. It has since been developed into a thriving agricultural and mining region, known pioneering the use of irrigation in Canada.
The Native American influence in the area is evident at the nearby Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump World Heritage Site. Native Americans used buffalo jumps to kill buffalo by stampeding them over a cliff. In addition, the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park provides some of the world's most spectacular mountain scenery.
We'll also visit the beautiful and serene Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge, which was established to recognize the contribution of Japanese Canadians who were forcibly relocated to Lethbridge from the west coast during the Second World War. The garden, rich in authenticity and artistic symbolism, is complete with a teahouse, bell tower, azumaya shelter, stone lanterns, gates and bridges built of aromatic wood from yellow cypress.
Possible site trips include Banff and Lake Louise, as well as the Calgary Stampede. We are looking forward to having you join us on this amazing adventure! For more information, please contact Bridget Disney at
