Taiwan Exchange November 2nd, 1992,
16 ambassadors from Nebraska and Iowa

On November 2nd, 1992, 16 ambassadors left Lincoln to go halfway around the world - destination Taipei, Taiwan. We were met by a small contingent of Friendship Force members and led very quickly through customs. We then boarded a bus for the hour ride to Taipei for a welcoming reception. What a congenial, happy group - they made us feel very welcome. Some of our hosts spoke English, some did not. Our host was the exchange director, Mi, Li was the only one in our home who spoke English and there were 11 members of their family living them!

We all had varying experiences with our hosts - but everyone agreed we Couldn¹t have been better treated! They had a very interesting and varied week for us. We had time alone with our families and many group tours of the famous sights, buildings, temples (a lot!). The Chiang Kai Shek memorial and National museum fill and overflowing with over 600,000 items from Mainland China. We also went outside the city and into the hills where a lot of their tea is grown. It was fun to have tea the Chinese Way.

We learned to be quite adept at with chopsticks. Rice three times a day was the rule rather than the exception. We were all fascinated by the heavy traffic. It seemed to be a city full of many people working and hurrying about - the majority on scooters, which they parked right up on the sidewalks.

We attended a Chinese opera - the costumes and make-up and masks were wonderful. We decided they had to be acrobats first and singers second. Our week homestay went by all too fast and soon we were saying good-bye to our new friends.

Our second week was a circle tour of this small island, shaped like a tobacco leaf and smaller than Nebraska with 20 million living and working on it and every inch productive.

We had a lot of fun on our tour - slept in a variety of beds, ate a lot offish soup, chicken soup, fruit and some questionable things and of course rice. Probably one of our biggest surprises was going to a very large Buddhist monastery. Our guide, a large monk with a shaved head, turned out to be a lady from Arizona! She even gave us the score of the Nebraska Iowa State football game. This in the middle of Taiwan. She told us she is an avid Tom Osborne fan! Small world!

We traveled over 12,000 miles to and from Lincoln, spent almost 24 hours in various planes and came home with a new appreciation of yet another people and their culture and country. We saw many beautiful and fascinating sights but what we will always remember are the people and the friends we have made.
