Open World Leadership Program
September 16-24, 2006

udrop merican-style democracy and Women as Leaders with a Focus on Youth were the topics studied by nine Russian delegates who came to Lincoln through the Open World Leadership Program and Friendship Force International. The eight women and one man ranged in age from 21 to 43 years. They were eager to learn about American life and about American approaches to women’s leadership related to the theme.

Monday’s first focus was government, including sessions with the city mayor, a state senator, and an attorney, all women. The group enjoyed dinner and a welcome at the Nebraska governor’s residence and then participated in discussion with female leaders of the state’s Commission on the Status of Women and the city/county Women’s Commission.

Tuesday and Wednesday the group and their hosts traveled by bus to northeast Nebraska for a look at women in leadership among various populations in rural areas. Included were stops at a thriving corporation of Nebraska Native Americans, a dance and traditional meal with members of that native tribe, visits to several businesses owned by women, and a mock voting session at the City Hall of South Sioux City.

That evening and the next morning were spent at Ponca State Park, with home-cooked Russian soup dinner, singing and dancing around a campfire, and a nature-study hayrack ride around the park. After brunch, the group traveled to Bancroft and West Point, where they visited a farm and several businesses owned and operated by local women and were hosted at a city hamburger and hot dog dinner with entertainment by local children. To thank the city, the Russians presented and planted an oak tree on the city grounds.

Back in Lincoln for the final three days, the group again participated in several sessions involving local nongovernment agencies headed by women leaders serving youth. These included day care, halfway houses, treatment facilities, and a youth detention center. During their free time, the delegates sampled such American activities as church services, shopping, attending volleyball games, golf, zoos and museums, and the Blue Angels Air Show.
