"And it may prevent cancer"

fter the first week of being served exclusively green tea for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I was surprised when my second week hostess offered coffee.  When I inquired about this, I was told that many people in Japan are drinking coffee because it is considered healthy and may prevent cancer. I told her that in the U.S., we are being told to drink green tea because it is good for us and may prevent cancer.  From then on whenever I asked what some unidentifyable food was, my hostess would tell me she didn't know the English word for it, but it was good for me.  I would reply, "And it may prevent cancer", and we would both laugh.
